This AGM calls on all PPPS members and the wider labour movement to join with us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Morning Star. Without in any way diminishing the magnificent achievements of the Daily Worker before it, our modern newspaper laid the basis for its success today in staunch support for working class struggles in the late 1960s and 1970s.
The widespread admiration it retains today inside the labour movement owes much to the clarity of the Morning Star’s defence of mining, and other, communities in the 1980s. Its trenchant critique, well ahead of its time, of the acceptance of neo-liberalism by 'new' Labour, and its unparalleled advocacy of the sweep forward of left politics in today’s Labour Party, evidenced by the success of Morning Star columnist, Jeremy Corbyn, all add up to a good reason why we should have a thorough-going celebration of 50 years.
Building upon the success of the 50th Anniversary Birthday Bash, the Morning Star@50 event on July 23rd in Clerkenwell from 12 noon onwards is not to be missed! With stalls and film showings kicking off the event, a retrospective of the last 50 years involving participants, a lively open-air rally, and cultural entertainment, these are just a few of the delights on offer.
