Careers cuts 'squander' kids' futures

Cuts to school careers services risk "squandering" our kids' futures, children's charity Barnado's warned today.

The Helping the Inbetweeners report says that face-to-face consultations are being replaced with online and telephone services.

Money-grubbing Con-Dems have also ended the duty on councils to provide a universal careers service and the charity said the move was "jeopardising" children's chances of securing sustainable work.

Kids are now being referred to the National Careers Service (NCS) and website Plotr.

Barnardo's assistant director of policy Jonathan Rallings said: "The near-total lack of awareness amongst the young people interviewed about the government's website and helpline means that they are effectively offering 'ghost' services in the place of meaningful advice."
