The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (12A)

Film
by Maria Duarte

Directed by Harald Zwart

With Hollywood desperate to find the next lucrative Twilight franchise, The Mortal Instruments saga is the latest tween literary work to receive the big screen treatment.

Based on Cassandra Clare's first of six novels it centres on a feisty if reluctant heroine Clary Fray (Lily Collins) who is thrust into a parallell world of monsters and Shadowhunters - angel-human hybrids who protect humans - when she meets the enigmatic Jace (Jamie Campbell Bower).

The book's legions of fans may well be disappointed with this less than faithful adaptation.

Though Collins makes a kick-ass Clary, Campbell Bower is just too bland and insipid as Jace in this fantasy coming-of-age tale about betrayal, incest and teenage gay angst.
