US always served own interests

I read Betty Tebbs's interesting letter (M Star August 17) which referred to the United States's motivation for becoming involved in the second world war.

While the first world war was mentioned too, the US's reason for entry was not.

My own opinion is that the US became involved in that conflict after uncovering a plot by Germany to encourage Mexico to invade.

As with the US's entry into the second world war, it had nothing to do with any US desire to aid Britain, with whom she fought as an associate power rather than as a full ally.

I also think that some US citizens of German descent had volunteered for the German army.
